2024 RULES
All open entries in the poultry department must be pre-registered by July 31, 2024 in order to plan caging assignments. Complete the form at the end of the Poultry Rules and Regulations. Any late registrations and entries will only be accepted if there are cages available. Banding is not required.
All Junior Poultry Exhibits which are being shown as a 4-H/FFA Project which may be sold in the 4-H FFA Livestock Sale on August 19th must be registered in person before July 13, 2024. Your exhibit will be banded. An email will be sent out with details.
- The committee reserves the right to reject any entry which is diseased or otherwise undesirable.
- Junior Exhibitors’ Poultry will be accepted on Sunday between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. If there are less than three specimens in a class, the committee reserves the right to award less than first place money in open classes only.
- Separate classes will be set up if there are at least three specimens of a particular breed.
- An entry fee of $1.00 per entry will be charged. 4-H/FFA members must exhibit in open competition to be eligible for 4-H/FFA awards. The fee will be used to offset testing fees.
- Chickens and turkeys will be accepted between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Sunday (this being the only time they can be tested for pullorum typhoid). All other poultry department entries will be accepted until cages are full or 4:00 p.m. Sunday, whichever comes first.
- Open show eggs will be judged in Department I. Junior show eggs will be judged in Department G.
- All 4-H/FFA entries must be personally managed and cared for by the exhibitor making the entry. Exhibitors will clean their cages daily and will be responsible for their own feeding and watering. Watering needs to be done four times daily with feeding recommended twice daily. Cups will be provided. Feed will be supplied for those who wish to use it. If an exhibitor is unable to meet the watering and feeding schedule; they must have someone else to do it for them. There will be a book to write who will be taking care of your exhibits and when; please place the caretaker’s name with yours in parenthesis next to it there. Management reserves the right to ask you to take birds home if proper care is not provided any time during the week; premiums will also be forfeited.
- Showmanship classes will be divided into Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Novice Showmen will be those youth who have not shown beef as a 4-H/FFA project previously at the Clarke County Fair and are the age of 12 or under as of September 30, 2024. Junior Showman will be those exhibitors who will be between 9 and 12 years of age as of September 30, 2024. Intermediate showmen will be those exhibitors who will be between 13 and 15 years of age as of September 30, 2024 and Senior Showmen are those exhibitors who will be between 16 and 19 years of age as of September 30, 2024.
- All 4-H/FFA members who are showing in the Junior Division are required to participate in the Showmanship Contest to sell in the Livestock Sale.
- The committee chairman reserves the right to limit the number of entries in a category or total entries due to cage limitations.
- Entry must have been owned by the exhibitor since July 9, 2024.
- Poultry Poster Contest- This contest is open to all 4-H/FFA members. Create a poster on a regular-size poster board to be judged and displayed in the Poultry Barn during the week of the Fair. The subject matter should reflect anything educational related to Poultry. Creativity is encouraged. Posters must be brought to the Poultry Barn by 10:00 P.M. on the Monday of fair week.
- Junior Grand Champion and Junior Reserve Champion must be sold in the Market Sale on Friday.

POULTRY AWARDS
Clarke County Ruritan Poultry Showmanship Awards
Banners will be presented by the Clarke County Ruritan Club to the first place exhibitors in each of the showmanship divisions: Junior, Intermediate and Senior.
Clarke County Ruritan Poultry Barn Awards
Trophies will be presented by the Clarke County Ruritan Club to the first and second place exhibitors of Poultry and Junior Poultry.
H-Squared Junior Flock Management Award
This award is given to the Junior showperson who displays the highest level of care and cleanliness with their poultry in the barn.
Paws & Claws Champion Youth Poultry Award
The Champion youth poultry recipient will be awarded the newest edition of the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection book. Each youth may only win this award once in their 4-H/FFA career.
Poultry Lovers Award
A $25 cash prize will be awarded to the youth exhibitor in the Poultry Barn who demonstrates enthusiasm, knowledge and positive attitude towards Poultry while interacting with the public, judges, and fellow exhibitors. This award is sponsored by Bydand Farm.
Big Brother/Sister Mentor Award
A $25 cash prize will be awarded to the 4-H/FFA poultry exhibitor that is helpful and supportive in assisting the younger club members with their exhibits throughout the week of the Fair. The award is sponsored by the Paws & Claws 4-H Club.
